Propaganda forces free speech to speak in his vocabulary, so free speech looses her voice and dies. The performers make speeches during her funeral to define their personal engagement about the actual political situation. They search for their desires and awake free speech in the intimany of a pillow talk.
The performance is a a highly poetic ode to the power of taking a time break, of sleeping, but not forgetting, of the power of a young generation which is still not defined by the system and our desire to get out of the system. At the same time it is an attempt to make slow theatre as a way out to to the seduction of propaganda, a slowing down of the senses and the manipulation of meaning. We understand propaganda as an oracle of slogans, that make you wonder how you react on it and reveals who you are.
The performance is bilingual in a manipulative way, there are Hungarian and English texts, but there is hardly a direct and correct translation.
PROPAGANDA! is a co-production of The Symptoms with the Dutch-Austrian artist duo “united sorry” (Frans Poelstra & Robert Steijn). It is a sequel to a research project by united sorry (“lost in space” Brut Vienna, 2010, “Holy Shit”, Vienna, 2010) to explore different answers to counterattack one dimensional slogans. A series of collaborations are planned with different groups in different countries. The project aims at making a catalogue of the specific tools and strategies of political propaganda and using them as a creative means of changing the political debates in Europe.
